Plan ahead and put the people you trust in control
None of us knows what the future may bring. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to plan ahead by choosing people you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you need support in the future.
Making an LPA does not mean giving up control of your affairs. It means deciding, while you are able to do so, who you would want to act for you and what authority you would like them to have.
There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney:
Property and Financial Affairs
A Property and Financial Affairs LPA can allow your chosen attorney or attorneys to help with matters such as managing bank accounts, paying bills, dealing with benefits, managing investments or buying and selling property.
Depending on how the LPA is prepared, your attorneys may be able to assist you while you still have capacity, as well as if you become unable to make financial decisions yourself.
Health and Welfare
A Health and Welfare LPA allows your attorneys to make certain decisions about your health and personal welfare if you are unable to make those decisions yourself. This can include decisions about your care, where you live and medical treatment.
You can also decide whether your attorneys should have authority to make decisions about life-sustaining treatment.
Why make an LPA?
An LPA gives you the opportunity to choose who you trust to act for you rather than leaving important decisions until a time when you may no longer be able to make those arrangements yourself.
Our solicitors can guide you through the process, explain the choices available to you and ensure your LPA reflects your wishes.
